 Meet the designers

Meet the lighting design masterminds behind some of the most surprising and innovative forms surfacing today. We look at some of the juicy and organic works coming from big name designers Karim Rashid for ITRE and Jeremy  Cole, as well as sleek and functional designs from Antoni Arola for SANTA & COLE, Benedito Design for LEDS-C4 and Valerio Cometti for ITRE. The gamut of designers selected hail from France, the Netherlands, Italy, Israel, New Zealand, Egypt and Spain.

Santa and Cole Blanco

SANTA & COLE Blanco table lamp series designed by Antoni Arola (SPAIN).

Antoni Arola is one of the most outstanding and versatile Spanish industrial designers. He was awarded the Spanish National Design Prize in 2003 and has gone on to win the Interior Design “Best of Year” Award, 2011 for his Blanco table lamp seen above. Blanco is created as a series of four models with essential shapes illuminated by LED, usable as table-top bookcases, luminous shelving or lighting composition systems.

 

Santa and Cole Cirio

SANTA & COLE Cirio downlight designed by Antoni Arola (SPAIN).

The Cirio was inspired by the lights he saw in the Mosques of Istanbul. The shades can be changed from porcelain to black aluminium and contain an LED light source. Arola has utilized the lights with repetition and patterns to suit their various applications.

 

Santa and Cole Cubrik

SANTA & COLE Cubrik pendant designed by Antoni Arola (SPAIN).

The Cubrik was inspired by the the famous Rubiks cube. Arola wanted to design a lamp that could offer various light compositions to accompany the various moods of its user. The square plates can be manoeuvred to create different lighting effects at the preference of its user.

 

ITRE Trex

ITRE Trex wall sconce designed by Karim Rashid (EGYPT).

Karim Rashid has won over 300 design awards, has 3000 designs currently in production and a portfolio of work featuring many high-profile luxury brands.

The Trex wall sconce appears to pulsate due to gentle variations of light intensity across its surface. Its unique round-hexagonal shape means the sconce can be clustered  into various formations. The Trex is made from heat-formed white acrylic with an LED light source.

 

Itre Katana

ITRE Katana floor lamp designed by Valerio Cometti (ITALY).

Valerio Cometti comes from a background in mechanical engineering and founded the design studio "V12 Design" in Milan. Valerio aims to intergrate design and engineering in a single creative process.

Katana slices the air with its two delicately balanced carbon blades. The lamp houses a music-sensitive core and technological heart capable of communicating with a smart phone, iPod or Bluetooth device. Katana rings, vibrates and lights up with sound.

 

LEDS C4 Siluet

LEDS-C4 Siluet pendant designed by Benedito Design (SPAIN).

Ramon Benedito was awarded Spain’s National Design Award in 1992 and currently specialises in product design and development, working with some of Spain’s major design houses.

The Siluet pendant was a finalist at the the 2011 Delta Awards. It is a sleek linear-suspension made from high-density rigid polyurethane with a white lacquered finish. Its diffusers provide both direct and indirect lighting.

 

BVE Pinup

BRAND VAN EGMOND Pin-up pendant designed by Richard Hutten (THE NETHERLANDS).

Richard Hutten is a graduate of the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven and is one of the most internationally successful Dutch designers.

The lighting sculpture is made from iron discs, delicately imprinted with sexy female silhouettes. The interior glitters with silver and gold when illuminated.

 

BVE Table dAmis

BRAND VAN EGMOND Table d’Amis pendant designed by William Brand and Annet van Egmond (THE NETHERLANDS).

William Brand and Annet van Egmond graduated at the “Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, the Netherlands” where he was trained as an architect and she as a sculptor. The two are responsible for the brand concept, design and art-direction for BRAND VAN EGMOND.

The thought provoking Table d’Amis was inspired by summer dinners with white linen tablecloths and candles. Made from stainless steel with black matte finish, this pendant emits direct and indirect lighting.

 

JEREMY COLE Aloe

JEREMY COLE Aloe Bud suspension lamp designed by Jeremy Cole (NEW ZEALAND).

A New Zealander by birth, Jeremy Cole was the first non-Swede to have his works purchased by several of Stockholm's stylish government buildings. Cole has a fascination with hand-crafted porcelain that is ever present in his works. 

The Aloe Bud suspension lamp is made with polished aluminium fittings, a stainless steel suspension system, transparent acrylic sub-structure and hand-crafted porcelain components that are fixed to the acrylic sub-structure. The lamp emits direct and indirect light.

 

Murano Due Vip Bollicante

MURANO DUE Vip PL Bollicante spotlight designed by Carlo Nason (ITALY).

Nason, a glass craftsman from Murano has more than 30 years of association with the material. His experience has earned him many awards and he has exhibited works in museums internationally.

The Vip Bollicante spotlight comprises a glass sphere suspended by three blades, which diffuses the light. The air bubbles refract light, creating patterned effects within its application.

 

AQUA CREATIONS Stand by

AQUA CREATIONS Stand By sculptural lighting designed by Ayala Serfaty (ISRAEL).

Serfaty gained her Bachelor of Fine Arts in her hometown of Tel Aviv, Israel and has since exhibited in museums and galleries internationally for the last 20 years.

This is the first underwater bar and restaurant located in Israel’s national coral reef resort. The Stand By is dimmable and made with silk that is stretched over a metal frame.

 

Murano Due Ether

MURANO DUE Ether designed by Patrick Jouin (FRANCE).

Jouin has a long and impressive portfolio of high-profile clients including Alessi and Renault. The Ether hanging lamp is a cascade of glass droplets made from blown glass and polished steel.
